Question: " My dog pants heavily in the summer and prefers being indoors. Should I shave him to be more comfortable?"
Answer: Shaving your dog in the summer might seem like a logical way to keep them cool, but in many cases, it can actually do more harm than good. A dog’ s coat is designed to regulate body temperature, not just keep them warm in winter. In breeds with double coats- like Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds- the fur acts as insulation, helping to keep heat out, as well as in. Removing that coat can interfere with this natural cooling system, making it harder for your dog to stay comfortable in hot weather. Additionally, a dog’ s fur provides important protection from the sun. Without it, their skin is more vulnerable to sunburn, irritation, and even long-term damage, such as skin cancer. Shaving can also affect how the coat grows back, sometimes leading to uneven patches or changes in texture. Instead of shaving, regular brushing to remove loose fur and prevent matting is a much safer and more effective way to help your dog stay cool. Providing shade, fresh water, and limiting exercise during peak heat hours will also go a long way in keeping your dog safe and comfortable all summer long.
