Engineering Design Class Builds Bridges
Students in our Engineering Design class recently put their creativity and problem-solving skills to the test during an exciting bridge-building challenge. Using only popsicle sticks and glue, students were tasked with designing and constructing bridges capable of holding as much weight as possible.
The first round of testing showcased the students’ ingenuity and determination. Bridges were carefully placed under increasing amounts of weight to determine which design would prove the strongest. The top-performing bridge from the initial challenge held an impressive 22 pounds, or approximately 10 kilograms. Aaliyah Hopkins’ bridge design stood out among the competition, surviving the longest during testing.
However, like true engineers, the class was not satisfied with their first attempt. After reviewing what worked well and identifying areas for improvement, students took on a second challenge with an even greater level of difficulty. This time, the bridges were required to span a longer distance, forcing teams to rethink and redesign their original structures. Students collaborated, tested new ideas, and strengthened their designs using lessons learned from the first challenge.
When it came time for the final test, the bridges performed beyond expectations. In fact, the structures were so strong that the class ran out of available weights in the classroom and had to make a trip to the weight room to continue testing. The redesigned bridge successfully withstood an incredible 40 pounds, or 18 kilograms.
Congratulations to all of the students for fully engaging in the engineering design process through planning, testing, redesigning, and teamwork. Their hard work, persistence, and creativity made this challenge a tremendous success.
