BATTLE OF THE SEXES

Dear Battle of the Sexes:
My boyfriend recently asked me to move in with him, and at first I was thrilled. We’ ve been together for two years and I do love him. The problem is that he is unbelievably sloppy. His apartment is always cluttered with dirty dishes, laundry on the floor, and piles of unopened mail. I’ m the exact opposite- I like things neat, organized, and clean. Whenever I visit, I find myself straightening up because the mess makes me anxious. He laughs it off and says I’ m a“ neat freak,” but I’ m worried that if we live together I’ ll either turn into his maid or constantly nag him about cleaning. I don’ t want to damage the relationship, but I also don’ t want to live in chaos. Am I overreacting?
Dear Cleanliness Counts,
- Cleanliness Counts
You’ re not overreacting at all. Differences in cleanliness habits may seem minor while dating, but once couples share a home, they can become one of the biggest sources of tension. The issue isn’ t really about dishes or laundry- it’ s about respect, compatibility, and shared responsibility. Before moving in, have an honest conversation with your boyfriend about expectations. Explain that cleanliness affects your comfort and peace of mind, not just your preferences. Instead of accusing him of being messy, focus on practical solutions: dividing chores, setting standards, and agreeing on routines. It ' s important that you both take this issue seriously. Good luck!

Thought For The Day
“ It’ s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’ re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any.”
