Traveling with Pets
by Cheyenne Pratt, Technician, Calico Creek Veterinary Clinic
Pets are part of the family so it makes sense that some people may want to take them along on vacation. If you’ re planning on traveling with your pet, organize everything ahead of time. When choosing a destination, look for pet-friendly lodging, restaurants, beaches, etc. Ask these places if they have any specific requirements. Include your pet as much as possible because it wouldn’ t be fair or safe to leave them alone in a hotel while the family is out.
Call your veterinarian or check your records to confirm that your pet is current on vaccinations. Some establishments require documentation proving that your pet is vaccinated, so bring copies with you. You should probably do this first, in case your pet needs vaccines and your vet can’ t get them in right away. Ask your vet about microchipping your pet, if it hasn’ t already been done. A microchip will help reunite you with your cat or dog in the event you get separated while traveling. Does your pet get car sick or anxious? Ask your vet about getting medications for the trip.
If your pet is new to car rides, work on acclimating them before hitting the road. You can do this by driving short distances or simply just sitting in the car with them. For everyone’ s safety, pets should be secured in the car, either in a crate or with the appropriate safety harness.
Pet travel checklist:
* a crate or harness for your vehicle * your pet ' s collar with ID tags * leash / harness * food / water / treats * photo of pet( in case they get lost) * blanket / pet bed * pet medications * pet first aid kit * vaccine records and vet info * poop bags * litter box( if taking a cat) * bowls * toys
