Sunshine Services

By JOAN VEDDER

We don’ t need donations at this time

By the time you are reading this issue, I will have had hand surgery and will be recovering. Since January, I’ ve been hurting and it has limited
VEDDER my basic functioning. Believe me, I’ m a much better nurse than a patient!
If you have been by Sunshine lately, you will see we are brimming over with supplies. Thus, we do not need any donations for now. You can call veterans, etc. to donate on your own. Might I mention, too, that you cannot just leave things for us, assuming we want( or need) them. This goes on frequently and I find items in there that people have“ left” anonymously so I have no way to return them. It leaves me needing to find a way to dispose of them and it eats into my personal time. Also, please, please do not leave broken or rusty items!
We also had an incident recently where a local resident entered our space and took items to a“ friend in need,” leaving a note for us. You need to call one of our listed volunteers to get help; do not assume you can do it yourself. We then have no idea of inventory numbers, etc. and cannot further trace things. Sunshine Service has upwards of many thousands of dollars of equipment that we are happy to loan out for Charbonneau residents and it’ s important that we know where things are.
Remember, if you have an“ emergency,” such as falling down, you can just dial 911 and help will arrive ASAP.“ Sunshine” is not such a service. We are here to help after immediate care is rendered.
Hopefully gardens are planted and we can now sit back and enjoy the beauty for many months to come. I don’ t know about you, but I have constant issues with squirrels that dig up the bedding plants I’ ve just put in the ground! Any solutions, let me know.
We always have new equipment in Sunshine, so be sure to come and take a look. We try to stay current on“ new” inventions and ideas for therapy.
I wish you all a happy June, filled with colors and scents!

SpringRidge at Charbonneau

By KERRY PHILLIPS

Scholarship program uplifts a new generation

At SpringRidge at Charbonneau, a senior living community, a decadeslong tradition continues to shape the futures of young team members while deepening bonds between generations. The Graduates Scholarship Program, launched in 1998, has awarded more than $ 150,000 to employees pursuing post-secondary education. For longtime resident Cynthia Carter, it’ s more than just a scholarship. It’ s a community commitment to recognizing potential and investing in young lives.
Cynthia, a retired nurse and current member of the Resident Council, was the previous co-chair of the Scholarship Committee alongside fellow resident Becky Corcoran.
“ This is a very worthwhile project,” she said.“ It gives us, as residents, a way to say thank you in a meaningful way. I’ m a firm believer in education, and this is one way we can help young people take steps toward their goals.”
Applicants go through a rigorous and inclusive selection process, which includes a written application, an in-person interview, academic
