We will hold a scramble on June 10
Lovely spring weather brought out many golfers and, along with that, came the tall tales and surprising golf experiences, especially as
LOFFINK we shook off the rustiness that comes with winter.
One such tale was told to me by one of our truly special Niners, Therese Baker. While enjoying a round with her and waiting for our turn on the Green # 5 tee box, she told me about a slightly unbelievable incident that occurred. It seems it was a bit of a blustery day, and four ladies were playing on this very same hole. They teed off and one of the ladies had put down a club on the ground when she decided to use a different one. After taking her shot they started down the fairway. Realizing she had left her other club on the ground, she went back to retrieve it. It was gone.“ How could that happen?” she mused, and the others came back to see what was happening. They looked for a couple of minutes, and in the interest of time, continued to play, baffled. On the next hole they ran into another golfer in his golf cart. They told him the story and the woman jumped into his electric cart, and they quickly went back to see if another set of eyes could find it. Puzzled, the gentlemen looked up to the heavens hoping for a revelation. And then … there it was in the big tree hanging from a limb. Smiling and laughing he knocked it down. The consensus that day from the group was the wind got hold of it and it took flight. As many of us know, anything can happen when a
golf course is your location to be on any given day.
Where there is one tale, there usually is another. While playing with a new Niner whom we shall call Lady B I witness that the flight of a golf ball can be very unpredictable. Soon into our round the women and I realized that Lady B was gifted with a powerful swing. It became evident when she inadvertently hit into the group in front of us. It was the first time that I recall I ever had to yell“ fore.” No one was hurt, but after that she would ask the group whether to hit or wait. That seemed to work for the rest of the round that day. A couple of days later I played again with her. All went well until the 9th hole on the red course. She proceeded to hit her drive. It sounded good and had great loft, yet the ball proceeded to take a sharp turn to the right and hit a tree with a loud bang. All of us stared as it went sideways into what we thought was the next fairway and disappeared. Lady B decided it was a favorite ball and quickly ran while holding out her arm with her hand up like a crosswalk guard, directing the golfers on the tee box to not hit just yet. We lost sight of her and within minutes she came back smiling. She had found her ball not in the next fairway, but in the one after that. She laughed as she said,“ I think that was out of bounds.” It was probably not a smart thing to do trying to retrieve a ball. All I can say is look out for her when she finds herself hitting straight on a regular basis.
Our next Niner event is the June 10 Scramble. The theme for this one is“ How I Spent My Winter Vacation” and once again check out the clever flyer Leesa created. Sign up information should be available, and the deadline will be the week before the event. The sign-up book is in the Proshop or sign up online at ladiesninersgolf. com. Coming after that will be Guest Day, July 6 and our Couples Tournament on July 22nd at 3 p. m. Start thinking about who you want to invite.
