SVRCS Builds Rockets
A new course that was designed this past school year, Engineering Design and Society, integrates the STEM fields through project-based learning. Students engage in hands-on activities that combine STEM disciplines, which are science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Then students relate each project to societal events and developments happening in our world.
This semester, the class has focused on space and reaching the final frontier. They have been experimenting with design aspects of rockets to determine how to make them fly straight, and using geometry to calculate how high the rockets have flown. The students started building little straw rockets, then began focusing on different fin designs on stomp rockets, as without the fin, the rockets would simply tumble end-over-end when catapulted in the air. The students then began building their own model rockets for a big launch.
Rockets were made from Hi-Flier Model Rocket kits that were donated to the program from a local patron. Kits include rockets that can vary from beginner to advanced building instructions. The rocket ' s materials are cardboard body tube, plastic nose cones, and wooden fins, all complying with many other small parts to create the aerodynamic rocket.
The official launch date for these rockets will be May 30th at SVRCS. Students also will have specialized tools that will measure the height that the rockets will reach. Stay tuned for photos and more information on the successful launches.
SVRCS Summer Programs
All camps require registration in order to participate. Contact the school at 570-725-7822. Summer Recreation- Free program for all children grades K-6. Tuesdays & Thursdays( July 8th- July 31st) 9am- 2pm, lunch provided.
Basketball Skills Camp( Grades 3-6): Tuesday & Thursday( July 8th- July 31st) 2:15pm- 3:15pm
Basketball Skills Camp( Grades 7-12): Monday & Wednesday( July 7th- July 30th) 9am- 11am.
Volleyball Camp( Grades 9-12): July 8th, 10th, 15th, 17th, 22nd, & 24th- 3pm- 5pm. August 4-8th 9am- noon.
