TELL US THE STORY OF HOW YOU GOT INTO CAKE DECORATING AND HOW YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? My cake decorating journey began when I was 17. My mum had started a cake decorating course at TAFE, and each week she ' d come home and teach me everything she ' d learned. I was already creative and loved baking, so cake decorating felt like a natural next step. My first " real " cake was actually my own engagement cake just a few years later. But it wasn’ t until 2013— 19 years later— that I launched Enchanted Cakes by Yvette and started making cakes professionally. In the years between, I became a Registered Nurse, got married, and had two beautiful daughters. I kept making magical cakes for my girls, and somewhere along the way, it went from hobby to obsession— I was dreaming about cakes, seeing designs everywhere, and making cakes for friends and family nonstop. What began as a creative outlet evolved into a fullfledged high-end cake business, which allowed me to step away from nursing and turn my passion into a profession. These days, I get to combine my love for cake design with teaching and mentoring. I now run online courses, write tutorials for Cake! Magazine, film for Cake! TV, and share content on my YouTube channel. It’ s been a journey built on practice, consistency, and a love of learning and sharing.
DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST EVER CAKE THAT YOU MADE AS PART OF YOUR BUSINESS? Absolutely! It was for a special 60th birthday celebration. The client was a friend of my sister’ s, and it was such a privilege to be trusted with that moment. The design was hugely popular at the time— a petite round vanilla cake covered in pale blue fondant, finished with a wide lace band and delicate pink sugar roses on top. I also made two dozen matching vanilla cupcakes, each topped with a sugar rose. That order perfectly reflected the style I loved: elegant fondant cakes and handcrafted sugar flowers. Since then, I’ ve also embraced and completely fallen in love with buttercream.
WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DESIGNS? Inspiration is truly everywhere. A colour scheme in a shop window, a texture on a birthday card, a pattern in nature— design ideas pop up in the most unexpected places. I find it exciting to translate those moments into edible art.
