June is National Cat Health Month . Most cat owners spend enough time with their cats to know behaviors that are normal , as well as behaviors that are not . It is important to discuss any abnormal behaviors with a veterinarian right away , in case there is an underlying health issue . Cats can act out in a variety of ways that could indicate something is wrong , including hiding , scratching / biting their owners , not wanting to be held , not wanting to eat or groom themselves , and urinating or defecating outside of the litterbox . It is also important that cat owners often take the time for thorough petting sessions . This allows cat owners to run their hands over the cat ' s entire body , checking for any new lumps and bumps , sore spots , or changes to the skin and hair . Cat owners should also check their cat ' s eyes , ears , and mouth regularly , if the cat will allow it . Yearly vet visits are important because the vet will check all of these things very thoroughly and can detect problems the owner may have overlooked . A healthy cat should have the following characteristics : Coat / body : thick , silky , shiny coat . No missing hair , dandruff , or grease . The body should be free of any lumps , bumps , and parasites , such as fleas and ticks . Eyes : Should be clear and bright , with no red or yellow discoloration . The eyes should not have any discharge coming from them . Ears : Should appear clean inside with no odor / discharge . Nose : Clean , no discharge or sores . Mouth : Gums should be a healthy pink color , not red or swollen . Bad breath could mean it is time for a dental cleaning . Make sure there are no growths on the outside of the mouth .
Some more obvious signs that there is a possible health issue are diarrhea or constipation that lasts for more than 24 hours , persistent vomiting , panting or labored breathing , difficulty urinating or blood in the urine , and / or sudden weight loss / gain .
Contact your veterinarian right away if you suspect there could be something going on with your cat , as it ' s always better to be safe than sorry !
