A Note From The Editor :
This month ' s column is actuallly a public service announcement . Before you send unwanted packages back to Amazon , be sure to check the contents ... not for the item , but for any beings that don ' t belong in the box ! Did you hear about the cat that got shipped to an out-of-state warehouse , along with the unwanted item ? Galena , a six year old cat from Utah , was inadvertently sent to a return center in California , after her owner , Matt Clark , packed up some work boots he ordered online that didn ' t suit his needs . Matt believes Galena jumped in the box when he left it unattended to get tape to seal it shut . So began the cat ' s 630 mile journey to an Amazon warehouse in a neighboring state . Meanwhile , Galena ' s concerned family noticed their cat was missing and launched a frantic week-long search . They were starting to lose hope when they received a phone call from an unfamiliar veterinarian ' s office . Brandy Hunter , an Amazon warehouse employee ( and luckily , a cat lover ), found Galena when she unpacked the box . Again , luck was on Galena ' s side , as a seam in the return package had become unglued , allowing enough airflow for her to breathe . Amazingly , she was dehydrated and had lost a pound or two , but was otherwise healthy , and very anxious to get out of the box ! Brandy took Galena to a vet to scan for a microchip , then called the family to let them know they had found their cat . Matt and his wife , Carrie , boarded a plane to California the next day to reunite with their stowaway . The Clarks say they ' ll be forever grateful to Brandy for going the extra mile to find them when she discovered their little traveler in the box . Carrie says Galena is a very special cat , and a huge emotional support for her . She joked that the family is waiting a bit to reintroduce cardboard to Galena because they don ' t want to stress her out ! Since last month ' s unplanned adventure , Carrie is now sharing their cat ' s story , with two key pieces of advice : Microchip your pets ... and be super sure to double-check your Amazon boxes before returning them !
