Cycle lane
A bike lane has been built along Nerja ’ s calle Neptuno which leads to the town ’ s Enrique López Cuenca sports centre . It is planned to link this with the new cycling lane under construction along the N-340 main road towards Maro . The new 160 metre stretch had a budget of around € 18,500 and is part of the Nerja Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan .
Dangerous road
A stretch of the N-340 road between Nerja and Almunécar has been named as the sixth most dangerous for drivers in Spain . The coastal road between kms 296.4 and 312.9 has been listed as a blackspot by EuroRAP , the European programme which analyses road traffic . Accidents recorded in recent years , their severity and their relationship with the characteristics of the road are taken into account in the assessment process .
Beach cancelled
The “ brick beach ” project , which proposed to regenerate beaches in the east of Vélez- Málaga with recycled building rubble , has been thrown out by the Ministry of Ecological Transition . It described the plan as “ incompatible ” with the present strategy for managing the coastline . The decision , which was to have been financed by the European Regional Development Fund , has triggered a political row locally .
New officers
Nerja is to appoint five new officers to its Local Police force . Councillor Ángela Díaz said approval for the new positions had been forthcoming from all parties and unions involved . Security and Transport Councillor Francisco Arce said the expansion of the force would have a “ positive impact ” on residents and visitors .
Water deal
Torrox has extended its contract with Aqualia for the home supply of drinking water , as well as sanitation and wastewater treatment . The 15 years extension also includes the urgent construction of a regulation deposit in El Morche . Mayor Óscar Medina said the deal ensures that residents will not have to face a considerable increase in costs .
New lights
Work continued last month on the replacement of public lighting in Nerja . The € 650,000 project is replacing sodium lights with LED technology to improve energy efficiency , save money and increase light levels . Over 1,900 lamps in 81 streets and 13 squares are being upgraded during the project .

Nerja Caves Music Festival returns

Nerja ’ s famous music festival at the caves complex in Maro returns next month after a two-year absence with five star names headlining the 61st annual event . All concerts will be held in the gardens around the caves in the nowrenamed Manuel del Campo Music Auditorium .
The concerts support the Foundation which manages the famous caverns at Maro , and this year each concert will be preceded by a specially arranged visit into the caves . In addition , the number of seats available at each concert has been increased to almost 2,450 , with further details and tickets already available at cuevadeneja . es .
The short season begins on July 21 with an appearance by Málaga-born Pablo Alborán who has released several albums and has been nominated for three Grammy awards , as well as other honours . The following night , July 22 , the Romani flamenco singer Israel Fernández will take to the stage , and on July 23 , it ’ s the turn of the great singersongwriter Víctor Manuel who celebrates his 75th birthday next month .
The following weekend , the singer and actress Ana Mena , born in Estepona , appears on July 28 , followed on July 30 by the closing concert hosted by Rosario Flores , winner of two Latin Grammy Awards .
Sea plunge
An 84-year-old man had to be rescued from his car late on May 18 after it left the N-340 road and plunged into the sea . The accident in the Calaceite area of Torrox left him trapped in the vehicle , but able to call for help by phone . He was conscious when extracted from the car and was taken to hospital in Vélez-Málaga .
New HQ
Nerja ’ s Civil Protection unit is to have a new base . Councillors last month approved plans for a new headquarters on a plot of municipal land close to the town ’ s sports centre . The site has been chosen for is location , space and proximity to the main communication routes .
Beach upgrades
A major project of emergency work on beaches at Málaga , Rincón de la Victoria and Vélez-Málaga is underway as part of € 2.1 million upgrade announced by the Province ’ s coastal department . Around 40 improvements are planned following the storms in early April and work includes the removal of elements such as damaged breakwaters , as well as , importantly , the delivery of about 300,000 cubic metres of replacement sand throughout the province .
