Weekend breaks
Commuters in Málaga are being encouraged to visit the coast of Granada at weekends . An advertising campaign on the city ’ s metro system has been promoting the area around Almuñécar and La Herradura , and promoting its the local gastronomy , beaches , water sports and culture . Almuñécar ' s head of tourism and beaches , Daniel Barbero , said getaway breaks have an “ impact ” on tourism in general .
Torrox grows
The population of Torrox has topped 20,000 for the first time , according to the Town Hall . If ratified by the National Institute of Statistics , the total takes the town over the threshold which entitles it to receive additional state and regional funding , plus four more local councillors . Mayor Óscar Medina said the population had grown by more than 5,000 in six years .
Noise monitoring
The city council in Málaga wants to make noise monitoring in rental properties compulsory . It says that complaints about noise made by holiday makers is a frequent cause of complaints among its residents and wants visitors to be made aware of the rules applicable in rental houses and apartments . The regional government is presently drawing up new regulations for holiday rental properties .
Cathedral covering
The Bishop of Málaga has received permission from the Culture Ministry to put a new waterproof roof on the city ’ s cathedral after 240 years . Since building work ceased in 1782 , the cathedral has relied on a temporary roof which has always leaked and now needs urgent attention . To fit a sloping roof as the original architect intended will cost around € 10 million , with funding expected to come from various public authorities .
Earth shakes
An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 was felt across a wide area on the afternoon of May 20 . The National Geographical Institute said the epicentre in the Alboran Sea off the Moroccan coast was at depth of only eight kilometres , and was followed by two aftershocks . Reports came in along the coast and inland from Málaga and Granada provinces .

Major Nerja development planned

Plans have been announced for an ambitious new project in Nerja which will provide the town with a fourth municipal car park and a transport interchange . The site , presently used as an informal car park , is adjacent to the construction area which will house by the municipality ’ s new health centre .
The Town Council last month contracted the preparation of a draft preliminary project for the construction of an underground car park with space for over 800 vehicles . The draft will determine the characteristics of the building , including the number of storeys it will include . Eventually , the roof of the car park will become the site of the town ’ s
A new centre for people with intellectual disabilities in Nerja is moving towards becoming a reality . The Town Council has commissioned the writing of a draft document outlining the technical characteristics of the building .
The complex will include 60 residential places , plus a day and occupational centre , to be built on a municipal plot of land on avenida de la Palmeras , just off the main road towards the motorway and Frigiliana . bus station within a modern transport interchange .
The new car park will be the fourth municipal facility in the town , and is expected to expand the number of public parking places available in Nerja to more than 2,000 . It will join the existing car parks at the Balcón de Europa , Verano Azul and Playa Burriana .

Taller de la Amistad

The draft project for work on the 5,000 square metre site will be drawn up based on the report from the Town Hall architect .
The project is the long-term dream of Taller de la Amistad , which , for 25 years , has worked for the inclusion and improvement of the quality of life of people with disabilities , minors with disorders in their development or risk of suffering from it , and their relatives , through the principles of normalisation and social and labour inclusion .
