The Costa Animal Society ( CAS ) spends a good portion of its resources helping cats who live on the streets and in the right circumstances rescues felines who are used to living with people but have been abandoned . Not only does CAS organise cat biscuits for feeding stations but is regularly called upon to assist street cats that require veterinary care such as sterilisation , vaccination , and treatment of an infection / illness and / or to care for a wound .
One case in May was Ginger , a male cat that has lived in the Balcon area of Nerja for more than ten years . He was captured and taken to the vet because of a bad right eye .
Ginger is a bit of a local celebrity in that he has been a regular fixture in town since he was a kitten and is well known to residents and tourists alike . In recent years the cat developed a growth in his lower right eye which would not heal and seemed to be getting worse . Somehow , before he was caught , the tumour became dislodged or was removed and the site soon became infected .
The vet determined the growth was not cancerous and the eye could be spared but the infection required treatment with antibiotic cream three times a day so CAS determined the only way to manage this would be in a private cattery where Ginger could have his own space for a few weeks . The cream is doing its magic and the eye has improved dramatically .
Unfortunately , Ginger does not like living indoors , which is understandable since he has been an outdoor cat all of his life , so when the treatment is over CAS will have to release him back to the area he knows and has lived for more than a decade .

Juno , the old gent , is still looking for a forever home . He was rescued from the campo earlier in the year and was suffering from a chronically abscessed tooth that had created an ulcerated wound through his right cheek . CAS took the dog to their vet who prescribed antibiotics after removing the bad tooth and Juno was placed in kennels to recover his health with regular meals and a soft bed .
However , the infected area turned out to be antibiotic resistant and after a few different treatments over the next several months it still persisted as an open wound . After the fourth examination the vet decided to take cultures and send them to the lab to pinpoint which medicine would be the most effective . The final course of specialised antibiotics did the trick and Juno ’ s face is now healing well .
So much so he was vaccinated , chipped and castrated in November . Juno has an independent personality and is quite used to being on his own but he does like the company of people and other non-aggressive dogs , and he is pretty much indifferent to cats . CAS thinks he is about 12 years old , but he is a resilient little dog with a strong constitution and would love nothing better than to live out his days in a nice warm home .

Juno
Fingers crossed , CAS will begin to return to our pre-Covid activity shortly . What makes the treatment of abused , abandonded , homeless or injured animals possible is due in large part to our monthly fund-raising events , obviously impossible for , can you believe it , over a year . There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel , as the vacination campaign progresses .
Thus , we have two fund-raising events scheduled . On Tuesday , June 8 , a 60s Quiz ( time to be confirmed ), will be held at Fitzgeralds , located under Supersol on Calle Antonio Ferrandis Chaquete 2 in Nerja .
