In 2013 , the state health department launched “ One Bite ” campaign ads about Lyme disease and tick-bite prevention on the radio , the Block Island ferries , Aquidneck Island and South County buses , tourism publications and local press in tick-endemic areas .
URI entomologist Tom Mather , a national go-to tick expert , is a big proponent of prevention . The reach of his Tick- Encounter Resource Center , a website loaded with practical information , has grown exponentially since its launch in 2006 .

Based on insurance claims data , the CDC estimates there are about 476,000 annual cases of Lyme disease in the United States , with the vast majority clustered in the Northeast .
“ It ’ s all about aggressive outreach . Rhode Island sits right in the middle of deer tick-endemic areas and we are leading the country in prevention messaging ,” he says . “ If you don ’ t get bitten , you don ’ t get Lyme . This is completely preventable .”
Mather also led a university team to study the effects of different yard treatments . Jan and David Terry of South Kingstown were enthusiastic participants . Their yard was sprayed and seeded with tubes bearing cotton balls treated with Permethrin for the mice to take back to their nests . The chemical kills the ticks in the larval or nymph stage . Both Terrys have had Lyme .
“ We are avid outdoor people . Because of our history , we thought it was a really important thing to do ,” says David Terry . “ It seems to be effective , but it ’ s not a guarantee .”
Among the more controversial interventions communities are moving to is removing the deer . Diuk-Wasser and Mather favor deer reduction , although there have been only a couple of small studies on its effect on the tick population and the Lyme disease incidence rate . But
