LaPlace School Heavily Damaged in Fire
Gets Help From VOL Students
On August 14th a devastating fire ripped through the halls of East St. John Elementary School in
LaPlace. What the fire did not destroy, the water from the fire department damaged. This happened just days
after students and teachers returned to school. The third graders at Visitation of Our Lady decided to help.
They organized a grade level supply drive and collected items for both the students and teachers of
East St. John Elementary School who were displaced due to the blaze. A huge assortment of supplies were
donated by third grade parents and students. The supplies were delivered to the school in mid-September. East
St. John teachers were overwhelmed by not only the supplies for the students, but the supplies for them as
well.
This school supply drive is just one example of the generosity of the parents, students, and faculty of
VOL School. In addition to helping communities who have suffered natural disasters, they also have annual
food drives and toy collections for needy children at Christmas, and regularly bring food to the VOL St.
Vincent DePaul Society to feed the hungry. VOL students are not only learning academics, they are learning
about generosity, love, and compassion.
