Good Stewards Don’t Say the Our Father,
They Pray It
How many Our Fathers have you prayed in your life? Thousands? Well, I believe that might be an understatement for the average
Catholic. We say a lot of Our Fathers. How about me? As best I can
figure, I have said more than 400,000 Our Fathers in my life. For decades, I have prayed three or four rosaries a day. The Our Fathers add up.
But, what’s truly important is not how many Our Fathers we SAY, but
how many Our Fathers we PRAY. There is a big difference.
Too many of us just rattle off the words. We have little or no
awareness of what we are saying. And, that’s unfortunate. It puts us on
the outs with Jesus. Go read Matthew 6:7. Right before he gives his disciples the perfect prayer, the Our Father, Jesus tells his followers, “In
your prayer, do not rattle on like the pagans.” In other words, slow
down! The Our Father’s words are few; but, prayed properly, they are
all we need. We don’t call it the PERFECT prayer for nothing.
Do we believe we KNOW the Our Father? We may, but I believe many of us don’t.
Why is the Our Father the perfect prayer? It is because, in very
few words, it contains everything Jesus believes we need to say when we
pray. Let’s explore.
