I answer with great enthusiasm: YESSSS!!!! So, what do you believe I’ll say next? I suspect you’re thinking I’ll say something about our bodies being temples of the Holy Spirit. You believe I’ll say we should keep our bodies in great shape because they are gifts of God. Maybe you believe I’ll say we should never abuse our bodies because they, like our very essence, are made in God’s image. You’re almost certain I’ll say we should respect our bodies because, after we go to Communion, the Son of God becomes part of us. The Communion wafer, the Real Presence of Jesus Christ, metabolizes and literally becomes part of our bodies. Well, those are all true enough, but that’s not the type of dieting I will talk about in this article. Go read Matthew 7:6-14. In those verses Jesus tells us how to get to heaven. He says we get there by going through the “narrow gate.” Okay, Jesus is once again using a metaphor. What is he trying to tell us? Well, he’s telling us the Pearly Gates are narrow; and, if we want to get through them, we’ll fail...IF. If we’re...FAT. Jesus is telling us we won’t get into heaven if we’re fat with life’s things. He’s telling us we must lose our attachment to putting houses, cars, boats, clothes, cell phones, jobs, hobbies Continued on page 8 - 1 -
