Good Stewards Don’t Kick
The Can Down The Road
The ancient Jews wandered in the desert for forty years.
Now, God had a lot to do with that. But, some historians say the Jews
would not have entered the Promised Land even if God had not kind
of exiled them to the desert for those forty years. Historians say the
Jews were building-up their army and their courage. They knew that
they would face fierce resistance from the people already living in
the Promised Land. They knew there would almost certainly be war.
Well, the forty years finally ended, but the Jews were still aw-
fully hesitant. They started coming-up with all kinds of excuses why
going-in might not be such a good idea. They even sent in scouts,
who came back to say the land was filled with fierce warriors. And,
then, the scouts gilded the lily. They said some of those people were
“giants” who would squash them like “grasshoppers.” And, finally,
before they finally entered the Promised Land, the Jews speculated
that God had punished them. Another forty years in the desert.
Why do I tell that story? Well, because it makes a significant
psychological point with meaningful spiritual overtones. Many of us
tend to ignore our problems, including the spiritual ones. We want to
kick the can down the road. Over and over, year after year. And, of
course, here’s what almost always happens. The problems get worse.
And, blaming God as the ancient Jews did, is just passing the buck.
The problem is ours, not God’s.
