Pope Francis Understands.
He’s Been There and Done That
Why do I love Pope
Francis so much? Well, I
believe it’s because he
combines two fabulous
attributes. First, he is a holy
man. But, in addition, he’s
one of us. He is, as we like to
say, REAL. He’s
approachable. He is not stand
offish. Unfortunately,
although I wish I could, I
don’t so much relate to Pope
Francis’ first attribute, his
holiness, as I do to his other attribute, his down home
realness. I’m striving to be holy. I really am. But, I’m not
there yet. Pope Francis is. Yet, despite his holiness,
perhaps because of it, I believe that if I had the ultimate
privilege of bumping into him on the street, I would be
comfortable asking him to have a beer with me. I’m old. I
go back to Pope Pius XII; but, perhaps with the single
exception of Pope John XXIII, I would feel comfortable in
asking only Pope Francis, “Hey, want to have a beer and talk
a little?”
A few weeks back, we were given a great example of
the Pope’s admirable and remarkable qualities. Pope Francis
admitted he stole a crucifix from a dead priest. Here’s the
story. While Francis was Vicar General of Buenos Aires, he
went to the wake of a priest he greatly admired. The priest
had been a man of mercy, much sought after for confession.
