Q&A with Tia Hines
1. Is your book about a real person?
7. How long did it take to write this book?
No, but often times I am asked if it is and
people sometimes call out a name. This is
part of the reason why I told a fictional story
like this because somewhere out there, this
does exist.
With edits included, it took me about 6
months.
2. How did you come up with the name
Desire for the main character?
Was it easy or hard to put together? The
editing is probably the most difficult and
time consuming part. For myself, when I
have a book idea, what I do, is get a
notebook and write out what is going to go
into each chapter. If there is specific dialogue
I want, I write that down and then I just
freestyle everything else.
I wanted a name that was unique, but also
had meaning especially with her character
traits of becoming promiscuous. Then, the
last name Jones completed the package
playing the role of like"Me and Mrs. Jones
Got a Thing Going On" if that makes sense.
3. What is the message you are trying to
convey?
I want teens to understand that HIV among
other STDs are not just problems that occur
with adults. Teens are included.
4. Your main character, Desire Jones, goes
through a lot in your book. Were any of
these moments hard for you to write?
The prologue was the hardest to write for me
because it was based upon although a little
exaggerated my own experience. To this day
my parents are unaware of this.
5. What advice do you have for someone
that may be going through what Desire
went through?
Unfortunately, bad things happen to good
people, but never lose hope. We were
brought down to learn how to get back up.
Do your best to remain positive and surround
yourself with positivity. Get involved with an
extracurricular activity or go all in with
something that you love to do. If you have no
idea what that is then figure it out. It will help
to get you through the worst of times, and
believe. Never be afraid to ask for help and
know that forgiveness heals all wounds.
6. The ending of the book kind of
insinuated that there may be a part 2. Will
there be?
If so, should we expect new characters or kill
offs. Yes, there will be a part two and there
may be a kill off or two, but of course you
have to read the book to find out.
8. What was the process for writing this
book?
9. What are your expectations for the
book?
Well of course, I'd love for it to be a
bestseller, but regardless of such, I want the
book to touch a person's soul and inspire
them to take value & self-worth in their mind
and body. If I know that I have inspired at
least one young person, then that is my
bestseller!
10. Do you think there is an HIV epidemic
among teens?
I think with the ignorance to the issue of not
contracting HIV or an STD because you are a
teen can lead to an epidemic.
