What Young Bill Clinton Was Spending His Money On
President Bill Clinton’ s journey through school and college wasn’ t that much different from thousands of other kids. Like other kids in high school he had part-time jobs and liked to spend his money on the ordinary pleasures lots of teenagers like. In his book My Life he recounts many historically fascinating events, such as meeting with world leaders or dealing with global military crises.
However, Clinton also notes many of the mundane financial details of his life that become much more interesting when you realize it is a future U. S. President who was budgeting for these things. Here are just seven of the notes Bill Clinton made about his finances as a kid in school and college.
1. Bill Clinton paid 10 cents in 1951 to go to the movies. For his 10 cents he says he got a large Coke, a feature film, a cartoon, a serial, and a newsreel.
2. Bill Clinton’ s first job was in a grocery store where he made $ 1.00 per hour to work as a stock boy.
3. Clinton was a young entrepreneur. He sold used comic books at a stand he set up in front of the grocery store where he worked.
4. In 1964 Clinton’ s Buick LeSabre got 8 miles per gallon, but he didn’ t mind since gas cost less than 30 cents per gallon.
5. When in college Clinton had a $ 5.00 a week dry cleaning bill because he was required to wear a dress shirt, tie, and jacket to class every day.
6. Bill Clinton spent $ 1.00 a day in 1964 for his meals Monday through Friday when in college. On weekends he only allowed himself 50 cents per day.
7. During his first year at Georgetown in 1964 Clinton’ s tuition was $ 1,200 and his room and fees were another $ 700.00. Additionally, food and miscellaneous expenses were extra. His mom and stepdad paid for his expenses. TQR
