When hiking, stay on well-worn paths and out of tall grass or bushy areas.  Check for ticks immediately after being outdoors. The longer a tick is attached, the greater your risk of infection.    If you discover a tick, use tweezers to remove it as close to the skin as possible. Don't grab it with your fingers and squeeze it. That injects the tick fluids into you and increases the risk of infection, Ohl warned. If you suffer a tick bite and develop a fever one to two weeks later, see a doctor. The incubation period for tick-borne diseases is eight to 14 days, he said. Protect your dog with tick collars or monthly treatments. This will prevent ticks from being brought into your home by the dog. Wear loose-fitting, cotton clothing in light colors. 2. Store your favorite lotions and aloe gels in the fridge for extra cooling relief from the heat. 3. Drink PLENTY of water (even if you’re not thirsty) 4. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as well as salty foods because these can cause dehydration quickly. 5. Limit sun exposure during the sun’s peak hours: 10am – 4pm. 6.  1. Take 1 or 2 cool showers a day to keep your body temperature down and keep you feeling fresh and comfortable. 7. Turn off appliances that are not in use as they can generate extra heat and raise your electric bill. 8. Keep a generous supply of refreshing, cool treats on hand like cucumbers, carrots, citrus fruits, and make your own popsicles out of fruit you have on hand. 9. Wet a hand towel and toss in the freezer until it’s frozen then put it on the back of your neck to help cool yourself down. 10. Keep meals light during the day – have a fresh salad or deli sandwich for lunch BUT take advantage of the crock pot for dinner. You can have a complete family meal cooking while you’re outside! There’s no having to slave over the hot oven and heat up the house!
