Pay-TV packages , that for years served both sets of providers well , are dead and content providers have recently been writing down billions on their legacy cable tv networks . At the same time , the streamers are increasingly cool with bundling and cooperating with service provider platforms who offer picks and promos from all their services . It ’ s really quite reminiscent of pay-TV packaging .
Because of OTT provision the functionality most prominent in the home has been increasingly cloud provided . But as more and more devices are enabled , wifi overload and security concerns see CPE back in fashion .
Now AI enters the picture and the question of where the power ( literally ) and processing should reside is relevant . Enhanced ML ( which is the actuality of most that is bandied about as AI ), will run on mid to high level CPE . But if you want to deploy the benefits of Generative AI , the processing needed and its power draw could be problematic .
So , the emphasis shifts back to the cloud ? Maybe , but that doesn ’ t make the processing and its power consumption go away , just moves it around . Part of the answer here , as in other areas , seems to be to containerise – limit – the limitless abilities of Generative AI , to units that will deliver only on aspects of what is relevant to the context of the service in hand . If that is the solution , CPE might be back in the picture .
