In this issue we take a look at cloud provision for OTT platforms. There is certainly no shortage of supply, and it should be a buyer’ s market. But it would be wise for those looking to start, or renew, their OTT provision to look beyond the price.
Other important factors include flexibility, operational and financial robustness, innovation record and security credentials. Buyer beware.
Meantime, as we look towards IBC, it is certain to feature two elements that are very much part of the zeitgeist: AI and sustainability. In the real world these are separate phenomena with their own agendas. In ours they go hand in hand.
The idea of streaming as an industry outside the sustainability debate is gone. OK, it isn’ t opencast mining, but it is not a zero-sum game – especially when compared to the negligible carbon footprint of over the air broadcasting.
AI is going to bring a lot more chips to the table – if you’ ll pardon the pun. And those chips are of the superfast variety, and therefore super hungry for electricity to power them up and for water to cool them down. They’ ll play a part in all kinds of ways; better transcoding, better security, better discovery. But how much better? Is it a case of‘ if the tools exist, we must use them to build … something?’
And that’ s before we get into the debate about AI in the generation of content. At least there, ethics and moral rights are a part of the conversation.
