The future of CPE is considered in this issue . Its future is , of course , tied into the relative progress of the cloud , as in more cloud , less CPE .
And there ’ s more cloud provision , of all kinds of things , every day . So , is CPE in decline , or is it just evolving ? Certainly , some in this issue note that more CPE is now hybrid , with cloud doing the heavy lifting and cheap ‘ thin ’ CPE doing the branding .
Others see its nature and purpose shifting more to the role of managing the home ’ s WiFi hub , including its QoE . The distinctions are in the abilities ( and , therefore , value ) of the CPE . This will depend on many things , including the provider ’ s technology legacy profile , the speed of their network and their buying power in terms cloud capacity .
Some see the way forward as more integration of CPE into other devices , offering an STB-free service , but with many of the elements of control and branding still in place – such as with Sky Glass .
That ’ s not to say that all providers will eventually migrate to wholly cloud-based provision , or integrated provision . Some think having a separate branded artefact in the home – even if it doesn ’ t do much – is very valuable from a service , and brand , appreciation point of view .
The role of CPE is certainly evolving , but it seems unlikely it is ending .
