PDJ : When you reflect on your career and your leadership journey , what does leading the association as PDA president mean to you ?
DR . ROSENTHAL : Being president of the PDA is the pinnacle of my leadership journey and I am very proud to do it . It is a big responsibility and I take it very seriously . This wasn ’ t a job I was always aiming for , which is why I spent nearly four decades focusing on my private practice in Jenkintown . However , having been involved in our state association over the years , and seeing the impact it can have on dentists in the state and the broader community , I thought there was a real opportunity to use the leadership skills I ’ ve developed to help the PDA grow in its membership and increase its advocacy efforts .
PDJ : During this year of your presidency , what are some things you are focusing on ? What are your primary goals ?
DR . ROSENTHAL : One of my main focuses has been defining what “ leadership ” actually means for the PDA . This will be done by developing specific standards so that future leaders will enter the job with awareness of what we ’ re asking them to do . The basic goal is to provide them direction and encourage leadership from the get-go . I see effective leadership as the means , not the end . With standards of effective leadership , we will hopefully have an environment where advocacy wins and increased participation is a regular theme - not a rarity .
