CIC appoints Prof Tony Crook CBE Deputy Chairman
At a meeting of its Council on 21 June 2017, Members of
the Construction Industry Council appointed Professor Tony
Crook CBE as its new Deputy Chairman commencing with
immediate effect.
Tony is expected to succeed Professor John Nolan, the
incumbent Chairman, following CIC’s June 2018 Council
meeting when John will stand down from his two year term
of office and resume the role of Deputy Chairman for one
last year, in accordance with CIC’s rules and byelaws.
Tony is a Chartered Town Planner and Fellow of the Royal
Town Planning Institute (RTPI). He is Emeritus Professor
of Town & Regional Planning at The University of Sheffield
where he was previously the senior Pro Vice Chancellor. He
is currently a member of the RTPI Board, chairing its Edu-
cation Committee, and is Deputy Group Chair of the Orbit
Housing Group. He has been a chair, director or trustee of
several other national and regional housing and regenera-
tion bodies, including as chair of the Shelter Trustee Board
and a member of the Lloyds Banking Group Housing Com-
mission.
Tony was appointed CBE in the 2014 New Year Honours List
for services to housing and the governance of charities and
elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Social Sciences
in 2004 in recognition of his contribution to housing re-
search and public policy.
Taking up his new role, Tony Crook said: “I am delighted
to be appointed to this important role. The construction
industry plays a vital role in our economy, The national
construction challenges we face, including the need for
more housing and major transport and other infrastructure,
require contributions from all our professions and disciplines
because these challenges can only be addressed by the
industry’s professions working together to ensure that what
we build is not only fit for our needs but that we make places
and buildings which are sustainable, safe and inclusive. I
look forward to working with all in the industry to ensure we
can do this together.”
CIC Chief Executive Graham Watts OBE welcomed the new
appointment by saying: “The appointment of Professor Crook
as Deputy Chairman of CIC is an important step to follow the
changes implemented following last year’s strategic review,
which focused the Council on being the Built Environment
Professions Together, concerned with the wider profession-
al issues within the built environment. Professor Crook is
the first nominee of the Royal Town Planning Institute to be
appointed as Deputy Chairman and brings a wealth of expe-
rience to the role.”
Current CIC Chair John Nolan also welcomed the appoint-
ment saying: “I am delighted that Tony will be joining the
leadership team at CIC and I look forward to working with
him over the next two years focusing on positive ways to
address our industry’s challenges and to celebrate its suc-
cesses.”
