“ Reporter” columnist and contributing editor Ellen Liberman says her goal in writing“ Immigration on Ice” was to capture“ the massive scope of this assault on all immigrants— including those here legally. Like any American who is not a member of a Native tribe, my predecessors were immigrants. They thrived sufficiently to help the next wave flee the death camps of World War II,” she says.“ So many Rhode Islanders are determined to protect their immigrant neighbors. And it makes sense when you consider that everywhere you look— from the St. Patrick’ s Day parades, to a bakery tray of zeppole, to the joyous Dominican Festival— Rhode Island loves to celebrate its immigrant heritage.”
Photographer Jonathan Pitts-Wiley was tasked with photographing portraits of immigrants and keeping one source anonymous for“ Immigration on Ice.”“ The work felt akin to a patriotic duty. In a fraught historical moment, it was an opportunity to champion the stories of people being unjustly targeted,” he says.“ Given the sensitive nature of the feature, I was concerned about establishing enough comfort to create quality portraits, but with each encounter, there was warmth and a willingness to connect. Being in the presence of what truly makes America great allowed me to focus on doing my best work.”
Photographer Angel Tucker traveled across the state photographing beautifully plated platters and dishes at local restaurants for“ The Ultimate Guide to Seafood.” She has photographed food at most of the spots for previous articles, and personally enjoyed Mystery Mondays at Metacom Kitchen with friends in her hometown of Warren.“ It was so nice reconnecting with so many chefs after so many years have gone by,” she says.“ I’ m so glad their restaurants are still here.”
