Maven’ s Delicatessen
Maven’ s pays homage to delicatessens of the past while having fun doing so. The modern traditional Jewish deli is glossy and bright with a retro appeal, featuring a large vintage wall photo of two guys in yarmulkes eating Chinese food, black-and-white geometric floor tiles and a glass case full of two-footlong salamis, pastrami, housemade corned beef and cold salads. Brisket and bread are the main event: Brisket is braised with caramelized onions and slathered with horseradish cream sauce on griddled challah for the Up Street Dip. Pastrami is wet-cured, rubbed with spices, smoked for hours, then cooled, steamed and hand-cut to order; the sandwich is served hot on housemade rye. Potatoes are a great fallback for coziness— latkes are crisp on the outside and soft on the interior, served with applesauce and sour cream, and the tallow-fried fries hit the sweet spot between soft and crispy. On the sweet side, the dessert case is stocked with black and white cookies, cheesecake and carrot cake.
