Ask Greta

Dear Greta,
I work with a woman who is very friendly and means well, but she talks constantly throughout the day and often asks personal questions about my family, finances, and private life. I prefer to keep my work relationships professional and don ' t enjoy sharing a lot of personal information. I don ' t want to hurt her feelings because she is genuinely nice, but I find myself becoming uncomfortable and distracted. How can I set boundaries without sounding rude?
- Private person
Dear Private:
It ' s possible to be kind and firm at the same time. The key is setting boundaries without making the other person feel rejected. When personal questions arise, try responding with a friendly but brief answer, then redirect the conversation back to work. For example, " Oh, everything ' s fine at home, thanks for asking. By the way, did you finish that report?" Over time, she ' ll begin to recognize that you prefer professional topics. If the conversations continue, consider a gentle, honest approach. You might say, " I tend to be a pretty private person, so I don ' t share much about my personal life. It ' s nothing personal- I just like to keep work and home separate." Most reasonable people respect clear boundaries when they are delivered warmly. Remember, you are not obligated to share personal details to be a good co-worker. Being courteous, helpful, and respectful is enough. Healthy workplace relationships don ' t require revealing your private life- they simply require mutual respect, and that includes respecting your preference for privacy.
