4th of July Pet Safety Tips

4th of July Pet Safety Tips

by Cheyenne Pratt, Technician, Calico Creek Veterinary Clinic
Independence Day celebrations may be enjoyable for us but can be dangerous and frightening for our pets. Here are some tips to help your pets stay safe and happy this 4th of July. * Call your veterinarian ahead of time to ask about calming products for fireworks. Your pet may need a stronger medication if they have extreme anxiety. * Exercise your pet a little extra before the fireworks begin to help reduce anxiety. * Provide a safe & comfortable space- a quiet room in the house with no windows or doors. Cats and dogs can get so frightened by fireworks, they may bolt through doors and windows and injure themselves. * Shut windows and blinds to help muffle the loud noises and make bright flashes less visible. * Mask the noise- leave the TV, radio or A / C on to help drown out the loud noises. * Offer distractions- give your pet some new, interactive toys, like kongs, puzzles, and chews to keep them busy and take their mind off what’ s going on outside. * Keep dogs leashed- it only takes one loud, unexpected boom of a firecracker to panic your dog and send them running. * Identification- make sure your dog has their collar on with I. D tags, in case they do get scared and bolt. More pets go missing around the 4th of July holiday than any other day of the year. * Avoid picnic food- do not allow your pet to eat picnic foods, as they may contain ingredients that are toxic to them. Fat trimmings and bones from the BBQ may cause illness or injury. * Keep cool- it’ s usually hot in July. If you and your pet are spending the day outside, they need to have access to shade and plenty of fresh water. Monitor them for signs of heat exhaustion, such as heavy panting, drooling, rapid heart rate, confusion, vomiting / diarrhea, and lethargy. * Keep fireworks out of reach- fireworks may contain hazardous chemicals and cause burns and other severe injuries. For your pet ' s safety, remove firework debris from your yard. * Other picnic / outdoor items to keep out of reach: alcoholic drinks, sunscreen, bug spray, citronella candles, tiki torch oil, matches, and lighter fluid- they can all be hazardous to pets.
Hopefully, with these few simple tips, you and your pets will have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July!
