1 ) Are You There , God ? It ' s Me , Margaret - The long-awaited film adaptation of the Judy Blume novel is everything it should be ... from the 1970 ' s setting , to the amazing performances , to the soundtrack ... See it ! - In theatres and streaming for a fee ...
2 ) The Idol - A supposed parody of the music industry helmed by pop artist The Weeknd does present a wonderful performance from Lily-Rose Depp ... and little if anything else . The storyline is confusing , The Weeknd cannot act , there is no cohesion from scene to scene . If this is the next big thing , somebody needs to question that definition . Avoid it ! - on Max ...
3 ) Asteroid City - The Wes Anderson cult will love his latest , the rest of us will find it a tough slog ... the writer / director has a signature style , and this film is admittingly beautifully made . But where is the emotion ? Where is the pacing , the whole point of why we are watching ? I don ' t have that much time .... Avoid it ! - in theatres ...
4 ) Elemental - Pixar has set an incredibly high standard - film after film has won awards and pushed animation to levels we now consider normal . Bottom line : Elemental does not push the envelope , but it ' s still exceptional - and it ' s fun for kids and adults . See it ! - in theatres ...
5 ) About My Father - Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco is having a moment - and that leads to this extended routine about his family - with Robert DeNiro portraying his dad . The interplay between the two is just fine , but the whole is less than the sum of its parts . Not Oscar material - but still a fine feel good summer movie . Watch it - in theatres and streaming for a fee ...
