“ It seems like a lot of people like our homemade stuff because it ’ s easy . They can just go home and eliminate the prep work . Just a quick cook and they ’ re eating ,” Calcese said .
At Red Barn Café and Pie Shop located at 391 US-206 in an over 150- year-old red barn , owner Evelyn Penza said they ’ ve been in business for about 50 years when she started making pies as a single mother .
“ I figured let me come up with something to keep these kids at home . And my older son Fred said , ‘ Make pies . Grandma always made them .’ She was a baker emeritus . She was a scientist . She was fantastic ; she really was ,” Penza said .
Penza listened to her son , started making pies and now her bodacious pies are famous . She has sweet and savory pies including apple , asparagus quiche with roasted red pepper , blueberry , peach ricotta , pecan and more .
In the fall , customers can expect the pumpkin ricotta pie to come back in season .
Glossy Fruit Farms , which was established in 1887 , also sells produce and flowers on Route 206 .
