Featured Dog of the Month
Ramon ( pictured ) was found in the campo near San Juan de Capistrano in the middle of June by a Spanish man who was concerned for his welfare . Unfortunately , the dog was not wearing a collar and did not have a chip so the Costa Animal Society ( CAS ) had him examined by their vet and paid for a passport , chip and vaccinations .
Ramon is a smaller dog who weighs around ten kilos and is about one to two years old . CAS thinks he is a Bodeguero cross and is hoping he is just a lost dog who could not find his way home and that an owner will come forward in the coming weeks . If he is not claimed by the middle of July , Ramon will be castrated and put up for adoption , but in the meantime he will be housed in private kennels .
If you would like to meet one of the animals under the care of CAS or are interested in fostering or adopting a pet please contact Kurt and Laura at 95 252 1426 .
CAS Cat News
The Costa Animal Society spends a good portion of its resources helping cats who live on the streets and in the right circumstances rescues felines who are used to living with people but have been abandoned . Not only does CAS organise cat biscuits for feeding stations but is regularly called upon to assist street cats that require veterinary care such as sterilisation , vaccination , and treatment of an infection / illness and / or to care for a wound .
One case in May was Ginger , a male cat that has lived in the Balcon area of Nerja for more than ten years . He was captured and taken to the vet because of a bad right eye .
Ginger is a bit of a local celebrity in that he has been a regular fixture in town since he was a kitten and is well known to residents and tourists alike . In recent years the cat developed a growth in his lower right eye which would not heal and seemed to be getting worse . Somehow , before he was caught , the tumour became dislodged or was removed and the site soon became infected .
The vet determined the growth was not cancerous and the eye could be spared but the infection required treatment with antibiotic cream three times a day so CAS determined the only way to manage this would be in a private cattery where Ginger could have his own space for a few weeks . The cream is doing its magic and the eye has improved dramatically .
Unfortunately , Ginger does not like living indoors , which is understandable since he has been an outdoor cat all of his life , so when the treatment is over CAS will have to release him back to the area he knows and has lived for more than a decade .
Upcoming Events
Fingers crossed , CAS will begin to return to our pre-Covid activity shortly . What makes the treatment of abused , abandoned , homeless or injured animals possible is due in large part to our monthly fund-raising events , obviously impossible for , can you believe it , over a year . There seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel , as the vaccination campaign progresses .
Upcoming events are always announced via our website or through social media . Our contact information is as follows : 653 557 237 , visit the shop , or see us online at www . casnerja . webs . com or on our Facebook page \ casnerja . We are also now on Instagram at : cats _ dogs29780 , and you can find us on Twitter by searching for Costa Animal Society Nerja .
