Alex Gagne spent
a lot of time
roaming
Misquamicut
beach last
summer on
assignment for
our feature,
“Currents of Time,” on Rhode Islanders’
favorite sprawling beachfront playground.
Alex’s previous RIM work
includes our annual top docs winners, a
photo essay on Rhode Island’s older
residents, and a day and night in the life
of Olneyville New York System. Alex also
hosts a photography podcast, “The Photo
Banter.”
“I’ve actually
never had
saffron,” says
Grace Kelly, who
wrote about the
pricey spice for
this month’s
Current. “But after
talking to Fari
Gheshm about how it could be Rhode
Island’s next cash crop, I’ll have to invest
in a few stamens.” While reporting, she
was surprised to discover that the saffron
flower, which produces red stamens that
sell for as much as $1,830 per pound,
looks like your average purple crocus.
“Here I was expecting this extravagant
plant, and it’s so unassuming,” she says.
Maria Fabrizio is
an illustrator and
designer who
believes smart
ideas make
beautiful work.
With an affection
for process, she
works by hand
and on screen for projects large and
small. “This was a challenging piece to
work on,” she says about her illustration
for this month’s Reporter on the heated
real estate market. “As it unfolded so did
the pandemic. Ultimately, I focused on
the supply and demand of the market,
without being too specific in terms of
neighborhoods or actual cost.”
