Shelter dogs Rio and Pearl
looking for forever home
T
he Shelbyville/Shelby County
Animal Shelter wants to
introduce two very special dogs
that are looking for a family to love. Pearl
(right) is a Chow/Shepherd mix who
is spayed, microchipped through Home
Again, wonderful with older children
and housebroken. Pearl is around eight
years old. Pearl’s bestfriend is Rio who
is neutered, microchipped through
AVID, wonderful with older children and
housebroken. Rio is only four years old.
This bonded pair were relinquished to
our shelter on April 30, 2016. Not long
after they were relinquished they had been
adopted into separate homes but both
were extremely depressed without each
other. When Rio was relinquished back,
the family that adopted Pearl opened their
home so that the pair could be together
again. Unfortunately, things didn’t work
out for this loving pair so they were
brought back to our shelter on Monday,
August 8th. We learned shortly after their
return that both dogs tested positive for
heartworm. Although it has taken nearly
six months of treatment, Rio is finally
cured. Pearl had a set-back as she had a
reaction to her treatment and had to take
a break until she had recovered. She is in
her final stages of treatment and we are
hoping she will get a clean bill of health
towards the end of summer.
Rio (left) and Pearl (right) are hoping to stay
together and looking for their forever home.
Because Rio and Pearl have been here
so long, they have quite a large “fan
club” that come to the shelter daily to
walk them, brush them and keep their
spirits lifted. Our goal is the same for this
dynamic duo as it is for all our pets,
to find a loving and forever home. Rio
and Pearl are a bonded pair and we are
not willing to separate them. We are
also looking for a home without other
dogs or cats. We know it is a tall order,
but also know there is someone out
there who will care and love them as
much as we do.
If you have any questions regarding Rio
and Pearl, please feel free to email the
Animal Shelter at
[email protected] or call
the Shelbyville/Shelby County Animal
Shelter at 317-392-5127 between the
hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday or 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
on Saturday. If you would like to come
to our shelter to meet our wonderful pets
or volunteer walking dogs and loving on
our kittens, our adoption/volunteer hours
are Monday through Friday from 11:00
a.m. to 4:45 p.m. or Saturday from 10:00
a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We are located at 705
Hale Road, Shelbyville.
We appreciate you taking the time
to read their story and sharing it with
others. On behalf of Rio and Pearl, we
want to thank all the businesses, groups
and individuals who make monetary
donations. All monetary donations as
well as fundraisers go into our “Surgery
and Neuter Fund.” That money enables
the shelter to treat the sick, injured and
neglected pets at our incredible facility.
None of this would be possible without
the kindness of others.
6-8 million cats and dogs enter animal shelter
every year in the U.S. 3-4 million of that number
are euthanized due to lack of homes.
