A LOOK INSIDE by Gina Siegert
As school kicks into gear , teachers and students are finding out how prepared they are to meet educational goals for 2016-17 . Research shows that children who are not able to read at their grade level by the time they reach third grade will gradually fall behind in all areas of learning . Most everything taught after this paramount year relies on reading comprehension in order for students to learn . We are fortunate to have so many local organizations dedicated to maintaining an increasing skills during the summer months . In this issue , we cover groups who are taking part in this effort . Our City of Dubuque , the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque , St . Mark Youth Enrichment , The Dubuque YMCA are supported by many dedicated educators who share their concerns . Read about their successes . September is also National Attendance Awareness Month . This is appropriate as our children shift from sleeping late in the morning to rising early , grabbing breakfast , and getting to school on time . Good luck ! Our September issue has traditionally focused on education . We have added several important articles highlighting educational efforts to improve students ’ success and reduce the “ summer slide ” for our students . Becca Dargatz examines how Clarke University has created a Professional Development School ( PDS ) for its elementary education program . The PDS program partners with schools by putting Clarke ’ s college professors and college students , who are working on their education degrees , into some of the local elementary and middle schools . In the schools , the college students learn firsthand and apply that knowledge when working with the K-8 students under the supervision of the classroom teachers and the Clarke instructors . Parents of first year college students will definitely want to take a look at Mindy Dalgarn ’ s informative article on “ Your Student ’ s College Journey .” We think you will be amazed and enlightened at what you will find in this section of the magazine . We also highlight the Farm to School program , part of the Driftless Farm Fest , which brings local and fresh produce into school lunches , as well as educating students on growing vegetables and poultry . Another aspect of the Driftless Farm Fest is the Farm-to-Table Dinner . This dinner features a four-course meal prepared by local chefs using the season ’ s best homegrown ingredients . The family style meal promises to be an unforgettable culinary experience . Seating is limited so purchase your tickets ASAP . Enjoy our Wine & Spirits with John B . Donovan as he travels through the vineyards of France and visits the historic E . Guigal winery . And our Locally Grown section takes a closer look at Dubuque ’ s Calico Bean Market . We would like to introduce you to Mindy Dalgarn , who has been writing for as of late and has two articles in this issue . Mindy spent 32 years in higher education at private ( Vanderbilt , Mercer , and Duke ) and public ( Purdue University , Calumet ) universities . She earned her doctorate in educational administration at Vanderbilt and has written extensively in the area of student life . She retired from Purdue Cal having served as Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs for five years . She and her twin sister opened The Mop Shop in Elizabeth , IL in 2014 and make cleaning supplies available to those who self-identify as being in need in Jo Daviess County . There is much more to enjoy in this month ’ s issue , so have a good read and remember to shop with our advertisers – they support us , so please support them .
