A LOOK INSIDE by Gina Siegert
Julien ’ s Journal takes note of regional arts and cultural events every month , but in October we commemorate the arts in a BIG way . It is National Arts & Humanities Month , a collective recognition of the importance of art and culture in America . We celebrate this with our annual Season of the Arts calendar . This comprehensive listing of area performances includes : gallery openings , museum events , spiritual center events , and university and high school concerts & plays . Every year , we try to bring it to you in an interesting and informational format that you will enjoy and keep around as a handy reference . Connie Cherba interviews Ellen Wagener , a DeWitt , IA native who paints familiar Iowa vistas in a panorama of colors . She spent four years working on the paintings featured in the current Dubuque Museum of Art exhibit . Most of her landscapes were painted from fields along Highway 61 . “ Highway 61 has become my muse . As a child we took old Highway 61 every week , and sometimes during the week , up to Maquoketa and out to the family farm in Andrew .” said Wagener . There ’ s still time to get to the Dubuque Museum of Art to enjoy Ellen Wagener ’ s No Ordinary Moments , an extraordinary collection of Iowa landscape pastels on exhibit in the Falb Family Gallery through November 6 . John Moran dives into the world of en plein air painting and follows this old movement into a new and exciting event happening at many sites around Dubuque . En plein air simply means “ in the open air .” Which is exactly where Bluff Strokes will be taking place . Approximately 50 artists will converge on Dubuque , set their easels up on the banks of the Mississippi , in front of historic buildings , or overlooking grand vistas and produce oil , pastel , or water color paintings in a week-long painting extravaganza . Two years ago , Wes Heitzman , artist Jillayne Pinchuk , and a group of like-minded art enthusiasts formed the Mississippi River Art Workshops , an organization formed under the umbrella of the Dubuque County Fine Arts Society . Their efforts have expanded into several art workshops with the Brush Strokes paint out competition highlighting the year . Make a point to visit the painters on site and see many beautiful , local , original works of art in progress . As I said , this is National Arts & Humanities Month , a collective recognition of the importance of art and culture in America . The City celebrates arts and culture this month with an official proclamation . The art scene in Dubuque has always been strong , but in September and October the scene is in overdrive . This is your call to participate in new facets of the arts and humanities in this community . We challenge you to shut the television or computer off and attend a concert , play , or gallery opening . The venues are many and the talent in our community is amazing . Read our 20-page Season of the Arts section for an extensive calendar of performing and fine arts events through 2017 … and buy tickets . The City of Dubuque recognizes the contributions of our local cultural organizations , and companies like Mediacom help promote artistic projects through generous grants . Nonprofit organizations , such as the Dubuque Arts Council and The Grand Opera House , bring the arts into our schools and communities . And local art galleries , theaters , and universities inspire us with their talents . This issue also covers our support for the fight against breast cancer . Look for the pink section in this issue to see what community efforts are taking place . We invite you to enjoy our October issue and use our Season of the Arts to plan your cultural calendar through next year . Facebook us to keep up with the latest events and news , and check our website for all events here on a daily basis . As always , shop local for better service and great merchandise !
