Music & Drama October 8 @ 7:30 PM & October 9 @ 2 PM Five Flags Theater The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra opens its 58th Classics Season with a program of music written for, or inspired by, theatre and television. Shakespeare, Goethe, and... yes, even Downton Abbey! This concert also features the Dubuque debut of sensational Russian pianist, Ilya Yakushev, performing the dazzling and melodic Piano Concerto No. 3 by Prokofiev. Music & Movement November 19 @ 7:30 PM & November 20 @ 2 PM Five Flags Theater Maestro Intriligator has invited the exceptionally talented Italian conductor and pianist Gianna Fratta to conduct this program of audience favorites. Italian violinist Dino De Palma is featured as soloist in beautiful and virtuosic works by Paganini and SaintSaëns. This concert demonstrates music from the world of opera as well as music’s relationship with dance. Holiday Family Concert December 3, 2016 @ 1 PM Five Flags Theater Jump into the spirit of the holiday season by joining us for our special family concert which features a shorter program of kid-friendly holiday music and sing-along tunes. Guest appearances will include vocal soloist Sarah Ellis, the Dubuque Chorale Children’s Choir, and members of the Heartland Ballet Company. Children are invited to get their picture taken with Santa for free after the family concert. These are paired with beautiful works featuring some of the great talent from the orchestra: Dubuque composer and DSO violist Paul Alan Price-Brenner is featured as well as two of our horn players and one of our percussionists. Memorable movie themes from Star Wars, Harry Potter, and video game Zelda are featured along with an excerpt from Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. Music & Movies March 25, 2017 @ 7:30 PM March 26, 2017 @ 2 PM Five Flags Theater This program combines some of the great film scores of John Williams with one of the most beautiful and well-loved symphonic favorites, Scheherazade, a work inspired by the stories of the Arabian Nights. We feature local saxophone master Allen Cordingley in the jazzy music from the film Catch Me If You Can. “Tragedy Tomorrow” by Dubuque native Michael Gilbertson is being “encored” on this concert. Music & Fantasy April 29, 2017 @ 7:30 PM April 30, 2017 @ 2 PM Five Flags Theater The orchestra welcomes violinist and Iowa native Robert Zimansky back to the USA from his home in Switzerland, where he is Concertmaster of the Orchestra of the Swiss Romande. Zimansky performs Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy: a beautiful musical homage to the folk music of Scotland. This concert also features Brahms’ Third Symphony and a short new premiere by Dubuque native Derek Jenkins round out this program.
