A Look Inside / NOVEMBER - From the Publisher
As I sit here looking out the
window at the wind blowing
brightly colored leaves down
Bluff Street and the blue sky
beyond that, I can’t help but
feel that we’ve moved into a
whole new ballgame.
Things feel different. Nature’s seasonal
rules have changed. Daylight saving time
isn’t saving us much daylight anymore.
Winter coats and hats replace short
sleeves and sandals. I find it energizing
and exciting. The holidays are approaching and everyone is beginning to make
plans with family and friends.
November is National Philanthropy Month.
Our feature articles in this issue once
again highlight the efforts of individuals
and businesses who give back, filling a
void in our communities where help is
needed. Philanthropy has always been a
vibrant part of our community. Again, we
give credit to the award recipients of the
Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). We applaud their efforts and
believe they will make Dubuque and the
surrounding area a better place to live and
raise families.
Dan McCarthy shares his insight on a
group making a big difference in our community. As a member of the Rotary Club of
Dubuque, Dan shares the many ways this
generous organization gives back to our
local community, as well as communities
around the world. We take note of their
accomplishments as Rotary celebrates
100 years of “Service above Self.”

We also honor and acknowledge the work
and dedication of former and current members of the U.S. armed forces. Originally
called Armistice Day to commemorate the
end of World War I, Congress passed the
bill that President Eisenhower signed in
1954 proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day to honor veterans of all wars and
to commemorate the efforts of the men
and women who keep our nation safe.
Pamela Brandt highlights a couple of
outstanding events on November 17-18
that spotlight the heroism of individuals
who served in Vietnam and the Middle
East. Taking place at the Heritage Center on the University of Dubuque (UD)
campus, the events are co-sponsored by
the Sergeant Jeffrey B. Dodge Veterans
Center. On Tuesday, November 17, the
public is invited to a free screening of
the documentary Last Days of Vietnam. A
performance of Letters Home by Chicago’s
Griffin Theatre Company will be featured
in the Centerstage series on Wednesday,
November 18. It is based on the real-life
letters written by service members who
lost their lives in Iraq or Afghanistan.
There is no better month than November
for wine and food adventures. The first
weekend of November, hit the road and
explore the Iowa Wine Trail as eight
participating wineries take you around
