to determine the extent of shoulder injury
and damage.
If surgery is indicated based on continued
pain and an MRI showing rotator cuff damage, the surgery often times can be performed arthroscopically as an outpatient.
Arthroscopic surgery on the shoulder can
be used for deimpingement or decompression surgery, acromial or clavicular joint
arthroscopy, and repair of a torn rotator
cuff. As in knee arthroscopy, small incisions
are created around the shoulder to insert a
camera to visualize the damage and repair
it through these small incisions. Depending
on the type of injury and damage to the
shoulder, recovery varies from six weeks to
six months for the individual. Often times,
outpatient physical therapy will be started
to rehabilitate the shoulder through gainful
function.
