WONDERLAND PHOTOGRAPHS, 1997
The series of photographs was shot between the end of 1996 and early 1997, while Julia Scher was researching
what would become her large-scale multimedia environment Wonderland, 1998. Each photograph depicts
a child wearing Scher’s signature pink guard cap and customized uniform with embroidered patches reading
‘Security by Julia’. The children, carrying batons and other technical equipment which relate to surveillance and
supposed security, playfully embody the authority invested in security guards and police officers. Seven children
posed for this photoshoot: Lena, Grace, Andy, Andre, Brandon, Jodi and Zoë.
Three of the photographs—featuring Lena, Andy and Brandon—were later included in the Wonderland
installation, as large Duratrans prints. Additional shots have now become individual framed prints, expressing
the theatrical atmosphere of the photoshoot.
