SUPERFOODS never tasted better
in September last year, the Finland Australia Chamber of Commerce reported a booming 52 per cent year-onyear growth in Australian revenues for one Finnish sauna brand.
Sauna-loving global celebrity enthusiasts such as Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and the Kardashians have also been influential locally, particularly on the heels of the pandemic.
“ Covid really pushed people towards home saunas,” says Victorian sauna builder Marko Tossavainen of Sauna HQ.“ Many customers missed using the sauna at their gym or local aquatic centre and, with venues closed, started looking into having one at home.”

The temperature trend
The mercury in a good sauna, says Nikita Miltiadou, president of the Australian Sauna Association, should sit at around 90 º C. That’ s what you’ ll find at Nikita’ s Blue Mountains Sauna, in the New South Wales town of Leura, which is so popular it turns away 200 or more heat-seekers each weekend, and is building larger premises to suit.
If sweating it out in a room set to just 10 degrees below boiling point seems a little toasty, don’ t be intimidated, says Nikita. It’ s actually where the fun starts.
“ If you get someone new who’ s never had exposure to proper temperature, and then throw them into a cold plunge [ pool ] afterwards, the transformative power of that experience always leaves them coming back,” he says.“ That’ s why the sauna movement is growing so rapidly.”
Saunas, of course, are not new; the Finns may have been building them for around 9,000 years.( Modern Finland – a country of 5.6 million people – boasts an estimated three million saunas, most of them private.) >
