Celebrating 50 years of Price Club
It has been 50 years since the first Price Club opened in San Diego, California. In 1976, the lawyer and entrepreneur Sol Price founded Price Club, which operated on a membership-based model and offered curated products in a no-frills warehouse environment – the same formula that Costco uses today. Now known as a warehouse club, the business streamlines the path from suppliers to members. The result: lower costs, with the savings passed on to those members. Price Club and Costco merged in 1993 to form PriceCostco, before rebranding to Costco Wholesale in 1997.
