Hello
Vintage
Lovers!
and a very friendly welcome to the
very first issue of Judy’s Affordable
Vintage Digest! If you’re reading
this, you probably know what
Judy’s events are all about (well
done you!) but we hope that over the
next 30-odd pages we can give you
a sneaky peek of all the work that
goes on behind the scenes to bring
vintage treasures to you, our
delightful little bargain hunters, all
over the country.
Naturally, we wouldn’t be here
writing this without the help of others,
and our first thank you has to go to
Judy Berger, our fearless leader, for
letting us start the project: for three
vintage fanatics, it is a huge honour
to be part of such an exciting brand.
Thanks also to the lovely traders and
vintage fans we interviewed this
issue, and particularly to Kate
McDougall of Trends With Benefits
who not only let us probe her purchases but submitted a great little
Tie-Dye tutorial that should see you
all jazz up your winter wardrobe.
We hope you love this issue - please
let us know what you think at
[email protected]
or tweet us @judysdigest. You can
even follow us on instagram - just
search judysvintagedigest.

What Judy Did...
Meet The Team
Jack Zelenka
Hello all! I’m 20 years old, from North
Yorkshire and I’m Head of Advertising for the
magazine. I love vintage because it offers
an alternative to the current mass produced
high street brands and styles that seem to
be overpopulated within my age group. It
also helps that vintage is comparatively dirt
cheap! My style is pretty standard rock and
roll. Skinny jeans, lots of band merchandise…
but presented a bit more neatly. I absolutely
love 1950’s America. The cars, the suits! So
suave.
Johanna Mangel
Hi, I’m aged 22 and Head of Content for the
magazine. Three years ago I packed up my
wardrobe and courage to move to England
to from my hometown Tallinn, Estonia. I was
converted to vintage many years ago after
seeing Audrey He pburn as the timeless Holly
Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Unfortunately I can’t say I have as perfect
of a wardrobe as Audrey did. I love to mix
and match my vintage finds with casual high
street pieces.
Jenessa Williams
Hi everyone, I’m 20 and I’m the head honcho
of this vintage magazine operation! I’m also
responsible for the design and photography. I
have been a slave to vintage ever since I
discovered how cheap it can be, and have
found vintage sizing to be so much more
flattering for my body shape than modern
high street fashion. I love wearing items that
have a unique history and personality. I would
describe my style as ‘housewife in training’ anything floral patterned, peter pan collared
or pastel coloured, I’m in!
T
he fact that vintage is the new
vogue has been transparent for
quite some time now. We all love to
stock up our wardrobes with shabby
chic, but it’s often difficult to know
where to look. Combining her love
for vintage with the frustration of
having nothing to wear, Judy Berger
came up with the winning formula
for her vintage fairs. Thus in 2005
Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair
was born in her Yorkshire hometown
of Leeds. For a day amazing vintage
traders from all over the UK
gathered together to present us their
incredible stock. The rest, as they
say, is vintage history.
‘In a nutshell, it was the recession,
plus prevalence in popular culture,’
says Kieran Leckey, the marketing
manager at Britain’s biggest vintage
bazaar, explaining why people are
loving it so much. TV shows like
Mad Men and Downton Abbey have
established themselves as not only
quality entertainment, but sources of
inspiration for fashion lovers. Leckey
adds, ‘It’s the fact that vintage is and
always has been pretty cool! People
are out there searching for items
that are accessible, anti-identikit and
vintage does that’.
For a long time the word vintage
used to equal expensive, however,
at Judy’s the key word is “affordable”. ‘Judy was fed up with vintage
events being so expensive, so she
set out to find traders who could
showcase the affordable, exciting
and trend-led side of vintage, aiming
to tour around the country and
promote old-world glamour that’s
never old-hat’ says Leckey.
Since starting seven years ago
Judy’s has come a long way. It
brings together UK’s top traders
in 30 cities nationwide while working with everyone from Benefit to
Jeremiah Weed to BBC Homes &
Antiques. They are also involved in
six major festivals including Vintage
at Goodwood and Vintage at the
Southbank. Judy’s has also been
featured by the likes of Elle, Asos,
Stylist and Vogue. Their wardrobes
cover everything from fashion,
accessories and furniture to vinyl,
haberdashery and textiles from the
20s onwards.
Judy is also responsible for bringing us the revolutionary Vintage
Kilo Sale. It’s been bringing in three
tonnes of quality mixed vintage from
the 1970s – 1990s to cities nationwide, since 2009. You can truly shop
‘til you drop without breaking the
bank as her team only charge £15
per kilo.
In addition to dealing with clothes
and accessories, Judy’s also does
furniture. In 2010 they founded The
Vintage Furniture Flea at their
London residency, Bethnal Green. It
covers everything from furniture and
home wares to textiles and
electricals, from the fifties and
beyond. In 2011 the Furniture Flea
was named ‘Best Vintage Fair’ according to the Vintage Guide to
London.
Judy’s is not planning world
domination (yet) but they do have
plans to expand to even more cities
and with celebrity shoppers such as
Florence Welch, Daisy & Pearl Lowe,
The Pierces, Chloe Sevigny and
Jade Jagger spreading the gospel
among so many other vintage lovers
there is no stopping Judy’s.
