Kinbote, a man with delusions of grandeur and an compulsive mind, con-
cocted a self-aggrandizing persona that, when not acknowledged to his
full satisfaction, resulted in his demented mind turning violent, causing him
to strike out at the object of his obsession. From this perspective, the pros-
ecution considers it clear that Charles Kinbote stalked and killed John
Shade, and that he is no monarch, but a murderer.
