that Charles Kinbote is unfit to be living among us in society and should be declared as guilty. Public defender: I would like to conclude with a quote by Kinbote from his preface to Pale Fire: “The calendar says I had known him only for a few months but there exist friendships which develop their own inner duration, their own eons of transparent time, independent of rotating, malicious mu- sic.” (18). With this quote, we are shown the true nature of John Shade and Charles Kinbote’s relationship: a friendship built upon true trust and admiration for each other. In fact, it was a friendship so dear that Charles himself felt comfortable enough to confide in him his biggest secret: that he truly is the king of Zembla. This is not the case of a man who is a delu- sional stalker, but that of a man who has just been misunderstood and misinterpreted by those around him. I believe that I have thoroughly made my case to prove his innocence. The Court: With those final statements, the jury will review the information given and decide a verdict. This meeting is hereby adjourned. All rise. CERTIFIATION I certify that in the case of The Region of Appalachia Vs.
