standing wrestler in his own right . The two seem to be good training partners for each other , with Henderson acting as the aggressor against the younger Dietz , and Dietz doing his best to repel the fusillade . Henderson is relentless , though , and Dietz seems to tire midway through the session , while Henderson appears to get stronger . Henderson ’ s younger brother , Brady , explains Brock ’ s style this way : “ Brock just goes hard for the whole six minutes and tires them out . He wears them down and breaks them so that they want to quit . He ’ s always the last one out of the wrestling room after practice and constantly pushes his teammates .”
Though Henderson believes that his well-rounded style gives him an advantage against most wrestlers he faces , he readily cops to one weakness — a tendency to be predictable . Better opponents , having studied video of his matches , notice his unrelenting style , and can protect against a few different setup moves that Henderson uses to score points . Stripped of his favored strategy , he has at times struggled . His freshman
Henderson ’ s most inveterate foil , though , has been his younger brother Brady , an incoming sophomore and 106-pound varsity starter boasting a 37-9 record who has wrestled Brock — on the mat and , to the chagrin of their mother Justine , at home — since childhood . Though Brady looks up to Brock , both as an older brother and a personification of his own wrestling dreams , their fraternal kinship ends as soon as practice starts . “ When we wrestle , there aren ’ t usually a ton of points scored ,” the younger Henderson said . “ We know each other , so my strategy is to try and go above his pace and wear him out so I can get to my offense .” With a surprising lack of reluctance , Brock agrees . “ He ’ s the best wrestling partner . Brady knows how to stop most of the things I always like to do , so that forces me to change it up and use different strategies .” Brady will be playing on the football team this fall , and Brock expects him to wrestle at 127 this winter . I ask Brock about the possibility of a Henderson family cage match for the starting spot at 127 if both brothers end up in that range ; if you ’ ve ever experienced sibling rivalry , his response won ’ t surprise you . “ Brady likes to say he ’ ll challenge year , he faced off against nemesis Jeremiah Colon of Newman Catholic High School in the third place match of the state tournament . Leading 2-0 early in the second period of the match , Colon locked his waist after a failed double leg shot and rolled him on his back for 5 points . Henderson came back to take a 7-6 later in the period , but tried the exact same move that hadn ’ t worked just minutes before , and Colon pinned him . Henderson muses about the benefits of losing this way . “ Learning from a loss is a lot easier because you ’ re forced to look at what you did wrong , and you ’ re forced to change , because if you do that again , you ’ re going to lose again . If you win , you always make mistakes . But then you forget about the mistakes . So sometimes losing can be better because it forces you to learn .” Of course , with Henderson ’ s 47-0 record in his state title-winning junior season , there wasn ’ t a lot of losing to be learned from . me to a wrestle-off for the starting spot at the same weight .” After a long pause , he adds matter-of-factly , “ But I think he ’ s too scared .”
Brock and Brady ’ s father , Larry Henderson , has been an assistant coach for North Linn High ’ s wrestling squad for years , and introduced both of his boys to wrestling at a young age . For Brock , a lack of size as a kid fueled both desire and necessity to compensate with superior technique . In 7th grade , he won the AAU State Championship in Iowa at a svelte 70 pounds . Following that season , he decided to commit himself to getting bigger , both at the dinner table and in the weight room . Within two years , he had shot up to 105 pounds . “ I had to learn to wrestle a new style with so much added weight in just a few years . Just focusing on fewer and better shots ,” he explained . Despite the new focus on discipline once he entered high school , Henderson has always maintained his confidence and aggressive style . “ Brock
