AROUND THE LEAGUE

Little Free Diverse Library

By Kadie Agnew , Communications Council Vice President
ON APRIL 22 , 2021 , THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MONTGOMERY UNVEILED ITS FIRST EVER LITTLE FREE DIVERSE LIBRARY

Designed to provide diverse books to people in the River Region , JLM members plan to distribute books that offer perspectives on racism and social justice , celebrate Black , Indigenous , people of color ( BIPOC ) and lesbian , gay , bisexual and transgender ( LGBTQ ) voices . Equity and inclusion are integral values of JLM and the plan is for the books to reflect those values while incorporating experiences from all identities for all readers .

Now in place , the JLM Little Free Diverse Library will be available to anyone who would like to use it , and members plan to rotate the books out as often as possible . JLM will also coordinate with local schools in hopes of giving students access to more books .
Little Free Library ® ( LFL ), an organization out of Hudson , Wisconsin , made this unveiling possible through their book-sharing movement and the availability to purchase a weather-resistant , lowmaintenance book-sharing box . Through this program , JLM will join with hundreds of other book-sharing boxes across the United States that are working to build community , inspire readers , and expand book access for all .
The library and current stock of books were purchased through an Association of Junior Leagues International ( AJLI ) Accelerator Award for $ 1,000 , which we applied for and were awarded in 2020 . Though we are currently stocked up for the next several months , we are looking to organize some space in the office to accept book donations in the future .
