Williams , received an award for their Summer Youth Grief Relief initiative , which will incorporate a new nonprofit organization and conduct its first public event as an official organization that will focus on grieving children who have lost a parent or guardian within the past year . Crystal Russell with Destiny Driven Inc . also received an award for the Leadership Academy Speech and Debate Initiative that will support the Destiny Driven Leadership Academy which aims to develop the confidence and oratorical skills of our youth through competitive speech and debate . Our task is to provide every opportunity for success for the youth in our community .
One of the best parts of this year ’ s Summit was the Leadership Perspectives Panel moderated by WSFA ’ s Tonya Terry . Panelists included Mia Mothershed of Jackson Hospital , Tay Knight of the Family Sunshine Center , Nichelle Nix of the Governor ’ s Office of Minority Affairs , and Ashley Robinett of Alabama Power . Not only did the panel include a diverse group of women with very different experiences and backgrounds sharing their knowledge , but we also had a surprise guest panelist , Nichelle Nix ’ s son , who absolutely stole the show ! Nichelle tried to pop off camera to avoid a disturbance , but panelists and attendees alike were adamant that she come back and let everyone see the baby . In a day full of shared experiences , this reminded everyone that we are all human , that we wear different hats and titles , and that real life happens . This one moment embodied the idea of women ’ s leadership and empowerment , and women supporting each other through real-life moments .
Following Col . Mentzer ’ s keynote address , the day wrapped up with closing remarks from Women ’ s Leadership Summit Chair Heather Goggin , who reflected on how there are some positives to all of the new perspectives we ’ ve been forced to gain over the last year – after all , without virtual events and meetings , we would have missed out on a lot of cats , puppies , and babies crashing the show – and whose day isn ’ t better with a few random cats , puppies , and babies ? Finally , she shared a favorite quote from author Cleo Wade : “... and your superpower may just be remembering that every new day could feel like the start to a new year ... new mood . New attitude . New goal . New Perspective . New mission . New venture . And new opportunity to be the most amazing version of yourself possible .”
